How much fence is an acre?
An acre is 43,560 square feet, a little smaller than a football field without the end zones. Make it a perfect square and each side is about 209 feet, so going all the way around takes roughly 835 feet of fence.
Here's that math for the usual lot sizes, with what each kind of fence would cost for a contractor-built job at our October 2026 prices:
| Lot size | Fence needed | Barbed wire | Woven wire | Split rail | Chain link, galvanized | Wood privacy, pine |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ¼ acre | 417 ft | $1,880 | $1,460 | $6,050 | $6,260 | $14,600 |
| ½ acre | 590 ft | $2,660 | $2,070 | $8,560 | $8,850 | $20,650 |
| 1 acre | 835 ft | $3,760 | $2,920 | $12,110 | $12,530 | $29,230 |
| 2 acres | 1,181 ft | $5,310 | $4,130 | $17,120 | $17,720 | $41,340 |
| 5 acres | 1,867 ft | $8,400 | $6,530 | $27,070 | $28,010 | $65,350 |
These are midpoints for a square lot with no gates. Real lots are rarely square, which is the next thing to talk about.
Shape matters more than you'd think
A square is the cheapest shape to fence, because it holds the most land for the least edge. Stretch the same acre into a long, narrow strip and the fence gets longer even though the land doesn't.
Try it. Switch the shape above from Square to Long lot and watch the footage climb.
For a real number, don't guess. Your survey or plat has the lot's dimensions, and most counties put parcel maps online for free. Once you know the length in feet, the fence cost calculator takes it directly.
Picking a fence for acreage
What it has to keep in decides most of it.
For goats, sheep and dogs, woven wire. It's cheap per foot, and the small openings stop animals that would walk through anything else. For cattle on a big pasture, barbed wire is the low-cost standard. Don't use it for horses, and don't use it where kids play.
Split rail is for marking a boundary and looking good from the road. A dog goes right through it unless you fasten wire mesh to the rails.
Chain link is the suburban answer for pets and kids. And privacy fence, wood or vinyl, is priced for back yards, not acres. Look at the right-hand side of the table. Most people run it near the house and switch to something cheaper past the patio.
Getting the number down
Fence less. Leaving the street side open takes a whole side off the bill, and so does using the house or a barn as part of the line.
Count gates carefully. On a wire fence, one wide drive gate can cost as much as a hundred feet of fence.
And if you're building wire fence yourself, put your effort into the corners. T-posts just get driven into the ground, but the braced corner and end posts carry all the tension. A wire fence is only as tight as its corners.
Fair questions
How much fence for a quarter acre?
About 417 feet if the lot is square and you fence all four sides. Most suburban lots are rectangles, so figure a bit more.
Is five acres five times the price?
No, and that's the good news. Fence follows the edge, not the area. Five acres is five times the land but only a little more than twice the fence: 1,867 feet against 835 for one acre.
Does this cover clearing the fence line?
No. Cutting brush and trees off the line is its own job, and on wooded land it can be a big one. Ask for it as a separate line on any quote.
